SUMMARY
Research question:
Working from home is a controversially
discussed human resource management practice. Some employers
suspect that the concerned workers might abuse their autonomy over
working time and place of work by reducing effort. However, working
from home might also improve employees’ work morale.
Methodology:
Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel
(SOEP) we apply multiple regression analyses to investigate the rela-
tionship between working from home and employees’ work effort.
Practical implications:
The estimation results show that, on aver-
age, working from home is positively associated with employees’
work effort. This can be explained by improved intrinsic motivation
caused by increased worker autonomy. Consequently, the concerns of
employers regarding an unobserved abuse of decentralized worker
autonomy appear to be unfounded.
